Rose's Pawn Shop Dancing on the Gallows

Dancing on the Gallows, the second album from California indie outfit, Rose's Pawn Shop (RPS), is going for adds June 28th and 29th

RPS confronts traditional country music themes of loss, lamentation, and redemption, while throwing in some drinking-songs for good measure. They’re borrowing pages from legends, but RPS takes those pages, tears them up, and sets them on fire with breakneck speed, bluegrass instrumentation, 3- and 4- part vocal harmonies and lyrics that will break your heart. No matter how low you’ve sunk, something in the music finds you. It picks you up and carries you home.

FCC Warning on Track 9.

Focus tracks: 1, 2, 5, 7, 11.

Everest - Still Looking For Support

We would like to thank everyone for supporting Everest's, On Approach. If you have yet to check out the album, please give it a spin.

Veteran producer/mixer Rob Schnapf (Elliot Smith, Foo Fighters, Beck) says of the album, “This record has a familiarity yet doesn’t copy anything. It’s expansive, and it doesn’t sit in one place. Listening back to the final version, I realized it was like an old-time record experience, one you don’t get any more.”

It truly is a great record, and we recommend you take the time to check it out. Everest is currently on tour in the U.S until 7/17. Visit www.myspace.com/everest for tour dates and locations!

Catching Up With Graham

On Tuesday, the AmApAc office took a field trip to Laurel Canyon to see Carolina Chocolate Drops play an acoustic set as part of Go Music's Mimosa Music series.  The gang enjoyed bagels, delicious Carmela ice cream (they even had a Carolina Chocolate Drops flavor just for the show), mimosas, and of course, a great set by the Carolina Chocolate Drops.  Violinist Justin Robinson forgot his jug, so the band improvised, using a Diet Snapple bottle.  The intimate crowd couldn't help but tap their feet and clap their hands along with this incredibly talented string trio.  Thanks to Gary Calamar, his wife, and his team for hosting such a lovely midday concert.  Thanks also to Julie Muncy of Warner Bros. for organizing.

About Gary and Go Music:

Gary Calamar, president of Go Music, is a Grammy-nominated producer and music supervisor for his work on HBO's “Six Feet Under.” He is currently overseeing the music on some of the most acclaimed and popular shows on television: “True Blood” (HBO), “House” (Fox), and "Dexter" (Showtime). Gary has also chosen the songs for the films “Varsity Blues,” for which he received a gold record, “Slums Of Beverly Hills” and the forthcoming release “I Love You Philip Morris”. Gary hosts a hit radio show every Sunday night on public radio powerhouse KCRW in Santa Monica. Gary’s unique brand of “adventurous pop music both timely and timeless” has been a favorite of listeners for over a decade. Gary’s book, Record Store Days (with Phil Gallo) about the rise and fall of The Record Store was released on Record Store Day, April 2010 from Sterling Publishing.

Laurie Anderson's Homeland

Homeland, Laurie Anderson's first studio album in nearly a decade, is finally available for airplay at your station.

Anderson's male alter ego, Fenway Bergamot, can be seen on the Homeland album cover and heard on the track "Another Day in America."  She also gets help from a cast of like-minded artists, including: vocals from Antony Hegarty and Tuvan throat singers, Four Tet's Kieran Hebden on keyboards, Lou Reed on guitar, and John Zorn on saxophone.  Give it a spin to see why Anderson's considered one of America's most provocative performance artists and musicians.

Click here to read Pitchfork's glowing 8.3/10 review of the album.

Homeland is out on Nonesuch Records and is going for adds June 28 and 29.  Check here for Anderson's upcoming live performances.

Going For Adds - Punch Brothers Antifogmatic

Last week you should have received the sophomore album from Punch Brothers, Antifogmatic

From their stellar appearance at Bonnaroo (stream the set here) to the performance of their song "Rye Whiskey" on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno last week, the guys are celebrating the release of their new Nonesuch record everywhere.  If you haven't had a chance to check out this genre-bending string band, please do; you'll be glad you did.  Let us know if you need another download link.

Fun fact: Antifogmatic is titled after an alcoholic drink from the 19th century that supposedly cured the effects of fog and other inclement weather. Band member Chris Thile (former mandolinist and vocalist for Nickel Creek) says of the title, "...This batch of tunes could be used in much the same way, and includes some characters who would probably benefit mightily, if temporarily, from a good antifogmatic."

We are going for adds on Antifogmatic this week.

Laurie Anderson - Coming This Week

We're so excited to share Laurie Anderson's latest release, Homeland, with you in only a few short days.

Anderson just received a rave review in PopMatters (9 out of 10).  Interviewer Ron Hart states, "...regardless of where you stand politically, theologically or environmentally, or even with regards to the challenging, avant-garde nature of her sound, you cannot deny the power of Anderson’s Homeland, one of the most riveting and poignant accounts of post-9/11 America pop music has offered to date."

Homeland is going for adds next week.  In the meantime, check out this excerpt from "Homeland: The Story of the Lark," the documentary on the making of the album.  Anderson discusses the challenges involved in gathering the thousands of files she had assembled for the project over the years, the daunting task of creating a single album from them, and the unfailing support she received from her husband and Homeland co-producer Lou Reed throughout the process.

Dead Weather - Still Going for Adds

Thanks to the following stations for charting the Dead Weather's Sea of Cowards in the CMJ Top 5 last week:

Bearcast, KCSS, KFSR, KLMU, KRSC, KUWS, KWCR, M3 Radio, Riddle/KFLI, WCWP, WDWN, WFWM, WHLS, WLVR, WMSE, WRSU, WSBU, WSGR, WSIA, WTTU, WXAC, WXAV, WXLV

Fronted by Allison Mosshart of the Kills and Jack White of the White Stripes, the Dead Weather are set to embark on tour this summer, unleashing their unique brand of menacing blues.  Check out the tour dates here.

If you haven't spun Sea of Cowards already, find out why Randy Lewis of the Los Angeles Times wrote "What elevates Dead Weather above so many less mindful practitioners of heavy music is that it comes up with songs that are the equivalent of smart bombs. They zero in on a target rather than indiscriminately obliterating everything for miles around...And both in songwriting and musical execution — the operative word throughout here — the Dead Weather has crafted the equivalent of a taut, expertly directed movie thriller."

Catching Up With Graham

I just got back from a great weekend out in Boston. Thanks to Steve, Doug, and Canada from Pirate! for showing me a good time on my first trip to the city. Most of our days were spent watching sports. Besides our daily intake of World Cup we went to two games at Fenway Park, including Manny Ramirez's first game back in Boston. The streets were saddened on Thursday night after the Lakers beat the Celtics in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. I'm not a fan of either team, but it would've been fun to celebrate in the winning city. On Saturday we went up to Maine and stopped at the coastal town of Ogunquit. We had a nice walk along the Atlantic Ocean and had some delicous lobster for dinner.

New Music From Punch Brothers Antifogmatic

We're thrilled to finally share the Punch Brothers' sophomore album, Antifogmatic, with all of you.  This follow up to 2008's highly praised Punch, features Chris Thile (Nickel Creek) on mandolin and lead vocals, Gabe Witcher (fiddle/violin), Noam Pikelny (banjo), Chris Eldridge (guitar), and Paul Kowert (bass).  Produced by Jon Brion (Brad Mehldau, Of Montreal, Elliott Smith, Kanye West), the 10 songs on the album were written collaboratively by the band.

"...their breathtaking virtuosity isn't about soloing but complex ensemble unity, with a cumulative power that leaves the listener pleansantly rung out." - Chicago Tribune

Antifogmatic is on Nonesuch Records and is going for adds June 21st and 22nd.  Punch Brothers are on tour throughout the summer and tour dates are listed here.

Laurie Anderson - Coming Soon

"Anderson's performance pieces can be mind-altering; when they work, they can change the way you see the everyday.  It's not an everyday record, but Homeland does draw on the everyday, in new and inventive ways." - NPR's Bob Boilen

Laurie Anderson is one of America’s most daring artists, working in music, visual art, poetry, film, and photography. Anderson has described Homeland, her acclaimed show ruminating on contemporary American culture, as “one-third politics, one-third pure music, and one-third strange dreams."  The album includes a guest appearances by Lou Reed, Antony Hegarty, Fourtet's Keiran Hebden and Anderson's male alter ego, Fenway Bergamot.  The piece—part political dialogue, part poetry song cycle combining words, electronics and live music—explores a range of contemporary issues, from the war and the media to America’s growing surveillance culture and the environment.

Homeland is out June 22 on Nonesuch Records and is coming your way next week. We'll be going for adds on June 28 & 29.

Rose's Pawn Shop - Coming Soon

"Rose's Pawn Shop brings something new (and quite lacking) to the current musical scene - originality. Not quite country, not quite bluegrass, but a wonderful mix of genres that results in a wonderful treat for the ears…Discard what you know, or think you know, about country music and bluegrass and listen. You'll be a fan for life." - Kill Your FM Magazine

It may come as a surprise to hear the foot-stomping strains of Appalachian bluegrass channeled through a rock band from Los Angeles, but heartache, loss and regret have always been the cornerstones of great music and this city has its share. In a town better known for porn stars and face lifts, anything as authentic and heartfelt as Rose's Pawn Shop is a pleasant surprise.

The self-released album, Dancing on the Gallows, is in stores August 3, 2010, and in your in-box next week. We'll be going for adds on June 28 & 29.

Third Man has a concert space as well as reel-to-reel recording equipment and their Thursday night performance featured comedic renditions of rock classics like Elvis Presley's "Blue Moon" to Willie Nelson's "On The Road Again." White and O'Brian plan to release a vinyl album of their collaboration.

Black Keys - Thanks for making Brothers #1

Thanks to everyone who helped get the new Black Keys album, Brothers, to #1 at college radio this week.  If you haven't had a chance yet to find out why Rolling Stone Magazine calls the album “A masterpiece...” please give it a spin.  If you're missing the download link, let us know, and we'll get a new one out to you right away.  Here's some more praise for the album:

“...hard-hitting, retro-rock gold.” “Brothers bursts with gritty garage soul.” - Billboard

“...classic...” - URB

“These new songs see the band achieve new levels of hybridity, as they skillfully incorporate elements of soul, psychedelia, and even hip-hop into their earthy sound.” - Interview

Bell Gardens - Still Going for Adds

Thanks to KSJD and KSSU for charting Bell Gardens last week.  We're excited to educate listeners about this new band, featuring members of Stars of the Lid & Furry Things.  If you haven't already, we'd really appreciate it if you could take the time to check out the EP and find out why the LA Weekly describes Hangups Need Company as “...gorgeous, rapturous pop balladry with candy-coated Beach Boys falsettos and pre-afro-Phil Spector production. It’s weightless with gravitas. [Singer, Kenneth James] Gibson might be the techno flavor du jour, but this is the stuff that will mark his place. I found him.”

The Flaming Lips - Video Premiere

Today marks the premiere of The Flaming Lip's latest video, for Embryonic album track "The Sparrow Looks Up At The Machine." The video, which Pitchfork rightfully dubs NSFW (not safe for work), features a scarcely clad girl being tortured by mysterious hooded figures... oh, and a monkey. For those of you with a high tolerance for blood, check out the video on Pitchfork here.

Last weekend, The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs performed Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon at Bonnaroo. If you didn't make it out to Tennessee for the performance but are craving some Bonnaroo merch then you are in luck! The official Flaming Lips store is selling limited edition Dark Side of the Moon event items on their website here.

David Byrne's TEDTalk released

Back in February, musician, arist and author David Byrne gave a talk at the eclectic TED conference in Long Beach. The talk, titled "How Architecture Helped Music Evolve," was posted online just last week. Byrne, who released the album Here Lies Love with Fatboy Slim back in April, spoke about how the architecture of a venue affects the music that is played in it. If you've never checked out a TEDTalk before, then David Byrne's music-infused presentation is a fine place to start! Watch the TEDTalk here.

Thanks to all who continue to support David Byrne and Fatboy Slim's album Here Lies Love!

Catching Up With Graham

Hope you all had a good weekend. Much of mine revolved around the World Cup. I've yet to get up in time to see the 4:30 AM PST games, but I've been watching most of the others. I have to be satisfied with the outcome of the USA-England match, although now the pressure is on to win these next matches. Friday night I watched the Dodgers get blown out by the Angels in the Freeway Series opener, Saturday night I went to Rose's Pawn Shop's Record Release Party at Spaceland, and Sunday night a group of us went back to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery Screening for Michelangelo Antonioni's Blowup.

The Dead Weather Sea of Cowards

The Dead Weather's Sea of Cowards moved up again on the CMJ charts last week. Anything you can do to keep pushing it at your station would be greatly appreciated.

Last week, Dead Weather member Jack White was part of an event at the White House with President Obama honoring Paul McCartney. White performed "Mother Nature's Son" and also "Hey Jude" alongside Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Herbie Hancock, and the Jonas Brothers. Go here to watch clips from the event.

Bell Gardens

Recently, you should have received the debut release from Bell Gardens (featuring members of Stars of the Lid & Furry Things). We would love if you could take the time to check it out and consider it for an add.

A special thanks to these stations that have already charted Hangups Need Company:

CJAM (Windsor, ON), KSJD (Mancos, CO), WRKC (Wilkes-Barre, PA)

Let us know if you haven't received this EP and we'll send one your way.

The Black Keys Brothers

The Black Keys new album, Brothers, besides being an amazing album, is also their first to feature harpsichord.

As Patrick Carney tells it, they didn't set out to use the archaic instrument, “At some point we called our management at three in the morning and left a cryptic voice mail to, like, bring a harpsichord. I don’t even know if Dan realized we’d done that. But the next day our manager showed up from Nashville with the harpsichord and we had both spaced on what had happened.”

Read more here and check out the harpsichord on track #8 "Too Afraid to Love You".

Brothers is already up to #3 on the CMJ Top 200. Thanks for your support.

Catching Up With Graham

Lately it has been a lot of work during the week and plenty of fun on the weekends. Three weekends ago I went wine tasting just North of Santa Barbara. Over Memorial Day Weekend I went to two screenings at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery: North By Northwest on Saturday and Purple Rain with Dam-Funk and Peanut Butter Wolf DJing on Sunday. I just got home last night from a great weekend camping in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park. Here I am next to a giant sequoia tree that was cut down. How refreshing to get out of Los Angeles to a place without cell reception.

The Dead Weather Sea of Cowards

The Dead Weather's Sea of Cowards has cracked the Top 10 on the CMJ charts, but we're looking for more. Anything you can do to give this great album a little extra push at your station would be appreciated.

The Dead Weather recently played a "secret" show in an old trucking warehouse in Chicago.

Spin Magazine has some great photos here.

Black Keys Studio Tour

Brothers, the new album from The Black Keys, debuted at #16 on the CMJ charts last week and was the Number One Most Added album last week. Thanks to everyone for the support. This is by far the strongest Black Keys album yet so keep exploring it. We'd really appreciate an extra push this week.

Dan Auerbach recently invited World Cafe host David Dye to his new home studio in Akron, Ohio. Dan and Patrick Carney performed four songs from their new album, Brothers, and talked about the recording process. Listen to the whole 24 minute interview/performance here. Dye also took a video tour of the studio and you can join him here.

Going For Adds This Week

Once again, last week was a big one for new music. We sent you the new Black Keys album, Brothers, on Tuesday and Bell Gardens' Hangups Need Company on Thursday.

Check out some of the praise for these two albums:

"On Brothers, the Keys make a thick, dirty racket, overdubbed but never overstuffed. 'Everlasting Light' has hive-of-bees distortion, corn-pone harmonies and an Auerbach falsetto that suggests Prince singing through a mummy's gauze. In 'Ten Cent Pistol,' the pair pile on the menace — a garage quintet's worth of guitars, organ and heavy death march — while leaving enough cold air in a mix that feels like a graveyard recital." - Rolling Stone

“[Hangups Need Company is] gorgeous, rapturous pop balladry with candy-coated Beach Boys falsettos and pre-afro-Phil Spector production. It’s weightless with gravitas." - LA Weekly

We are going for adds on The Black Keys and Bell Gardens this week.

They're not done yet, though. Now is your chance to own a piece of White Stripes history. Check out the red and white marimba they have up on eBay right now. Proceeds from the auction will go to the Nashville chapter of the American Red Cross. Hurry, the auction ends today.

More About The Black Keys Brothers

You got Brothers, the new album from The Black Keys, on Tuesday. Congratulations to these three stations for being the first to download the album (your BlakRoc vinyl will be in the mail soon):

CJSR
WMBR
KCRW

In 2009 guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney each released side project albums and they came together with 11 hip-hop artists for the amazing BlakRoc. On Brothers the duo was on its own for the most part, spending ten days at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama and coming up with an intensely focused, deeply soulful set that includes a cover of Jerry Butler's "Never Gonna Give You Up." The performances are inventive and impassioned: Auerbach extends his vocal range to falsetto on lead-off track " Everlasting Light" and "The Only One"; "Howlin' for You" opens with a Gary Glitter -style drum riff and the chorus practically invites singing along. The tunes offer a surprising amount of lyrical candor and more than a little dark humor; the grooves alternate between ballsy swagger and bluesy rumination.

Carney admits, 'Dan and I grew up a lot as individuals and musicians prior to making this album. Our relationship was tested in many ways but at the end of the day, we're brothers, and I think these songs reflect that.'

Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips released The Flaming Lips And Stardeath And White Dwarfs With Henry Rollins And Peaches Doing Dark Side Of The Moon on iTunes in December, the CD came out the first week of May and we sent you the digital version last week.

Catching Up With Graham

I went to both Flying Lotus shows in Los Angeles last weeked. The Friday night one was one of the loudest, bass-heavy shows I've ever attended. Saturday night featured Gaslamp Killer, Gonjasufi, Ravi Coltrane, and the debut performance of Flying Lotus' incredible new band: Infinity. Tuesday was bobblehead night for the Triple Crown threat, Andre Ethier. The Dodgers won, stretching their winning streak to 9 games, but Mr. Ethier was not in attendance because he broke his pinkie last weekend. Hope he heals quickly. Looking forward to Everest and Minus the Bear tonight at the Mayan Theatre.

New Music From The Black Keys Brothers

The maturation of the Black Keys as record makers and performers has been both subtle and startling. Brothers is their sixth full length album but they've been busy lately with several other projects. In 2009 guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney each released side project albums and they came together with 11 hip-hop artists for the amazing BlakRoc release.

Brothers is going for adds May 24th and 25th.

All tracks FCC Clean.

"Tighten Up" Video Premiere

The video for "Tighten Up," the Danger Mouse-produced first single from The Black Keys' new album Brothers, is premiering on MySpace Music right now.

Bell Gardens Hangups Need Company - Coming Thursday

Hangups Need Company, the debut release from Bell Gardens is coming your way Thursday. Bell Gardens is Kenneth James Gibson, Brian McBride and a cast of crazies.

Kenneth James Gibson has worked under eight or more different monikers, from the California dream noise rock project of the middle 90s, The Furry Things to his current techno artisanry as [a]pendics.shuffle. Brian McBride is better known as one half of the nocturnal lullaby giants, Stars of the Lid.

Wanting to experiment in what they believed to be a classic type of sound, the two relied mainly on live instrumentation for Hangups Need Company, using what was available in studios from the 50s to the mid 70s. Even the sounds of the strings were often recorded flat in an attempt to preserve both room sounds and the natural sound of the instrument.

The Hangups Need Company EP is on Failed Better Records and will be going for adds May 24th and 25th.

Going For Adds This Week

We sent you a lot of great music last week that we hope you've enjoyed enough to add this week.

On Wednesday you received On Approach, the beautiful new album by Everest.

"Everest paint their second album with images of Midwestern towns and melting, snow-capped skyscrapers. Home base may be Los Angeles, but Everest has designs on something a bit more wide open." -Los Angeles Times

All On Approach tracks FCC clean.

On Thursday you got The Flaming Lips And Stardeath And White Dwarfs With Henry Rollins And Peaches Doing Dark Side Of The Moon, The Flaming Lips 13th studio album. Lucky you.

FCC Warning for Dark Side of the Moon on tracks 1 and 5.

Let us know if you need us to resend either of these.

We are going for adds on Everest and Flaming Lips this week.

Coming This Week

If you liked getting all that great new music last week you're going to love this week.

Tuesday is the day all of you Black Keys fans have been waiting for. Last year was a very busy one for Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, releasing two solo/side-project albums and the collaborative hip-hop album, BlakRoc, that we sent you in November. This time it's back to their roots on Brothers, a collection of 15 tracks that are as tight and powerful as I've heard the duo in a long time. We sent you the Danger Mouse-produced "Tighten Up" in March and "Howlin' For You " in April. Tomorrow you'll get the whole album.

On Thursday we will be sending you the debut release from a Los Angeles, CA band called Bell Gardens which features Brian McBride of Stars of the Lid and Kenneth James Gibson, also known as [a]pendics.shuffle.

I've seen them three times recently and the shows have all been great. The LA Weekly had this to say about the album: “It’s gorgeous, rapturous pop balladry with candy-coated Beach Boys falsettos and pre-afro-Phil Spector production. It’s weightless with gravitas. Gibson might be the techno flavor du jour, but this is the stuff that will mark his place."

Hank III Rebel Within At Your Station Now

You should have Rebel Within by Hank III in your hands right now. Hopefully you've been able to put down the Karmageddon dice long enough to give the album a listen. Please let us know if you need us to send another copy.

FCC Warning on Tracks 2 and 10.

The CD does not come in a jewel case. Feel free to download a tray card here so that it's easier to find in your music library.

It is a track-for-track remake of Pink Floyd's 1973 album.

FCC warning on tracks 1 and 5.

This release is going for adds on May 17th & 18th.

David Byrne & Fatboy Slim's Here Lies Love - Looking For Support

We'd really appreciate an extra push on Here Lies Love this week. We cracked the Top 20 on the CMJ charts a couple weeks ago and we'd love to see it keep climbing.

Imelda Marcos recently spoke to the BBC about Here Lies Love and they used tracks from the album in the interview. Read about it here and watch the interview here.

"'Here Lies Love' is a fountain of funk and dance music that's entirely accessible, great fun and can easily be enjoyed a song at a time." - The Wall Street Journal

Catching Up With Graham

Lots of great stuff has been going on this past week. Last Thursday I hosted Craft Night at my place for the first time. I did a bit of doodling, but my main craft was making food for everyone. On Saturday evening I went to the Getty Museum for the Les Savy Fav show with a great group of friends. It had been a while since I last saw them, and they still put on a thrilling and energetic show. On Sunday I hiked Runyon Canyon for the first time. The trail gives you one of the best views of Los Angeles. I just can't believe it took me so long to see it. More crafting is scheduled for tonight and I have tickets for the Flying Lotus full band performance tomorrow night. Good times in sunny Southern California.

New Music From Everest On Approach

"If this album is just the approach, I can’t wait to see what happens when they get to the mountain top. As it is, On Approach is my runaway choice for the best album of the year so far." - Ken Shane, Popdose

If you're still wondering what Everest is like now is your chance to hear the full album. While you're waiting for that download to finish you can draw some clues from the folks they’ve toured with – Neil Young, Wilco, My Morning Jacket – but ultimately Everest is simply a great rock ‘n’ roll band in the classic, open-minded mold, something boldly apparent on their sophomore release, On Approach.

We are going for adds on May 17th & 18th.

All tracks FCC Clean

The Flaming Lips Dark Side Of The Moon - Coming Tomorrow

You may think you know The Dark Side of the Moon, but you've never heard it like this. The world's most predictably unpredictable band, The Flaming Lips, along with friends, Stardeath and White Dwarfs, Henry Rollins and Peaches, have just released on CD their track for track remake of Pink Floyd's seminal album. Pink Floyd fans may see this as an interesting reinterpretation of a classic and Flaming Lips fans will recognize the Lips' originality coming through.

Watch them recording "Breathe" here.

We'll send you this absorbing album tomorrow.

What People Are Saying About The Dead Weather's Sea of Cowards

We hope you're enjoying Sea of Cowards as much as we are.

Here's what some others are saying about the album:

"At 35 minutes, it's a blistering and compact slab of thunderous, bluesy hard rock. Born out of aggression more than invention, it's an appropriately barbed and consistently sturdy addition to White's rapidly expanding canon." -NPR

"As the album progresses, the band keeps the pummeling drive of their past work but ups the ante by throwing in some new sonic reference points. Jack White and the Dead Weather always sound like they have something up their collective sleeve. Thank God (and the Devil) they do." -PopMatters

"It's unhinged classic-rock explosiveness that sounds like it could be the result of a few vicious jam sessions-- the rumblings of scuzz-rock lifers given a chance to air out all their purest expressions of ire. And when a chorus does emerge from the swampy ether, as on the ferocious first single "Die By the Drop", it cuts deep." -Pitchfork

Dead Weather Sea of Cowards - Going For Adds

You've seen the face-melting performance of the entire album on MySpace, you've listened to the vinyl on their official website...now, finally, you have the second album from The Dead Weather. The 35 minute record is more "mountains of chest-rattling primal rock," as the LA Times described the first release by this supergroup.

We're going for adds today and tomorrow and we'd love some feedback on the album. Call us to tell us how much you love it.

Coming This Week - Everest On Approach and The Flaming Lips The Dark Side Of The Moon

This week is a big one for new music. On Wednesday, May 12, we're digitally servicing the new Everest album, On Approach, and the music keeps coming on Thursday, May 13 with The Flaming Lips' cover of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.

Wednesday, May 12

On Approach, the second LP from Los Angeles-based band, Everest, "has all the good things that make a great record,” says the album's producer/mixer Rob Schnapf (credits include such modern classics as Beck’s Mellow Gold & Odelay, Elliott Smith’s XO & Figure 8, as well as Foo Fighters ’ eponymous debut). “This record has a familiarity yet doesn’t copy anything. It’s expansive, and it doesn’t sit in one place. Listening back to the final version, I realized it was like an old-time record experience, one you don’t get any more.”

The band's currently touring North America, so check tour dates here and see the live show in a city near you.

Thursday, May 13

The Flaming Lips released their cover version of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon on iTunes in December, some limited edition seafoam green vinyl came out on Record Store Day and Thursday will be your chance to spin the album while your listeners can buy the CD in stores (out now).

The album is the thirteenth full-length studio album from The Flaming Lips and the full title is The Flaming Lips And Stardeath And White Dwarfs With Henry Rollins And Peaches Doing Dark Side Of The Moon, so obviously it features Stardeath and White Dwarfs, Henry Rollins and Peaches. It is a track-for-track remake of Pink Floyd's 1973 album.

Catching Up With Graham

I had a fantastic, fun-filled weekend. My good friend Wes from Barsuk was in town for the Phantogram show. On Saturday we had a delicious brunch and went up to the Griffith Observatory. That night I went out for Mexican food and then to the Dodger game. Andre Ethier hit a 3-run HR and they beat the Pirates 5-1. On Sunday I went to the Amoeba Garage Sale and picked up some steeply discounted 90s indie rock 7 inches. Afterwards I went to the Hollywood Farmers Market and bought some veggies and herbs. I picked up some clay pots and soil on the way home and planted my new herbs. I finished off the weekend with a Les Blank music documentary screening held at the house of the guy who puts on the Hollywood Forever Cemetery screenings.

'[Williams'] new album continues the synthesis of punk and country-western that has defined his career. [He] has greatly improved his songwriting...and the production is far tighter than previous albums. Best of all, he sounds even more like a modern version of his grandpa on this record than ever before, and that's saying something." -City Pages

David Byrne & Fatboy Slim's impressive 22-track song cycle about the life of former First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos and her childhood servant, Estrella Cumpas has been a huge hit on college radio so far. This past Sunday, Jacki Lyden interviewed legendary Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso for NPR's Morning Edition. If you weren't able to catch the story live, you can listen to it here.

There is also a video on that page of Veloso singing and playing with his mother and sister.

You should have zii e zie, his 41st full-length album, at your station now. It already won a Latin Grammy for Best Singer-Songwriter album in 2009, but is just being released in the US now.

Please let us know if you need another copy.

Thanks For Supporting David Byrne & Fatboy Slim's Here Lies Love

David Byrne & Fatboy Slim's impressive 22-track song cycle about the life of former First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos and her childhood servant, Estrella Cumpas has been a huge hit on college radio so far. It seems that you dig all the guest vocalists as much as we do (among others - Santigold, Florence Welch, Sia, Steve Earle, St. Vincent, Cyndi Lauper, Natalie Merchant, Tori Amos, Sharon Jones, and Nicole Atkins).

Thanks for the support on this extraordinary album.

Hank III Rebel Within Adding Next Week

We'll be digitally servicing this album to you this week. You may have already received a physical copy in the mail. The CD does not come in a jewel case. Download a tray card here if you'd like to put it in one so that it's easier to find it in your music library.

"[Hank Williams III's new album Rebel Within] rips through 11 songs that contemplate who he his, who he’s become, and the direction which life might take him." - Culture Bully

In an era of plastic, manufactured music, it is always refreshing when someone goes against the grain and does what they want to do. Hank Williams III is the best example of this in music today. For over twelve years now Shelton Hank Williams III has been fighting the music industry to be his own man. Cast by certain people in the shadow of his legendary grandfather, Williams has fought long and hard to create his own sound and style, and to preserve the true outlaw spirit of real country music. His ever-evolving three hour live shows pay respects to both his country roots, and the punk and metal influences that he has held true to since his teens.

Caetano Veloso On NPR This Sunday

NPR's Jacki Lyden will interview Caetano Veloso this Sunday, April 25, on Morning Edition. If you're unfamiliar with the Bob Dylan of Brazil this would be a good introduction to one of the founders of the Tropicalismo movement.

Caetano Veloso's zii e zie, his 41st full-length and winner of a Latin Grammy in 2009 for Best Singer-Songwriter album, should be at your station now and hopefully you've had a chance to listen to it. Caetano Veloso has been called "one of the greatest songwriters of the century" so it's definitely worth your time to check this out.

Please let us know if you need us to send you another copy.

Thanks For Supporting Blunt Mechanic's World Record

Hope you had a good weekend. Mine was full of fun. Saturday was Record Store Day. I went to four different stores in Los Angeles: Origami, Vacation, Amoeba, and Rockaway. Here a look at my stash of Record Store Day finds. It was so exciting to see the Built to Spill 7" in stores with my drawing on the cover. All of the stores were packed and Record Store Day seemed to be a huge success around the world. Thanks for supporting your independent record stores. Saturday night we did a S**tledger Radio Broadcast and then went dancing at The Echo's Funky Sole night.

Sunday was full of sports. I went to the Dodgers vs. Giants game where a great pitchers' duel ended with Manny hitting a pinch-hit 2-run home run to win the game. Later on I watched some of the NBA playoffs, and was happy to see both the Mavs and Blazers win.

Record Store Day Is Tomorrow, Saturday, April 17th

Are you ready?

What is Record Store Day? From the Record Store Day website:

"This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on. Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Francisco on April 19, 2008 and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April."

Go here to find participating stores near you and learn more about it.

Check this list to see all the amazing, limited releases that will be out there. It will be updated with new things so check it often.

Built to Spill's Record Store Day Exclusive

One of the Record Store Day releases I am most excited about is a Built To Spill 7" featuring one of my drawings on the cover. Head down early to your local independent record store tomorrow to pick up a copy. The A-side is a beautiful, new track called "Water Sleepers" and the B-side is a live version of them covering the Linus and Lucy theme song. This is one of my all-time favorite bands, and I couldn't be happier that they are using one of my drawings for this release.

Catching Up With Graham

I passed on going to see Pavement last night and instead finished a drawing that I had been working on for months. Plans for the weekend: no Coachella, record shopping, Birthday Karaoke Dance Party, Dodgers vs Giants, and NBA playoffs.

All About Blunt Mechanic

Ben Barnett is a musician who has, all his life, documented experiences through song. After releasing eight albums, six singles and five splits as Kind of Like Spitting over the course of a decade, retiring the moniker and reinventing himself as Music Director of Seattle’s Paul Green School of Rock, Barnett has now emerged triumphant with a new band, Blunt Mechanic, and said band’s debut full-length, World Record . Both band and album tip heavy on the riffaged hooks and light on the darkness; big on the thumbs up--no time for the thumbs down.

In the mid-‘90s, and for more than a decade following, Barnett had enough thumbs-down to last him through the foreseeable future. His life then had become about Kind of Like Spitting, and at a certain point, existence had become nomadic, cyclic, troublesome and challenging, and it was time to stop and re-evaluate; reinvent. As often happens when you’re truly open to new things, reinvention found Barnett when he was offered a job that was to be his life calling: teaching kids how to play music. It was a revelation: this was what he was here to do; this was what he was amazing at doing, and this is what he loved: showing kids how to blow peoples’ minds onstage and grow their own souls and self-confidence in the process.

Speaking of processes: during all of this, Barnett found himself completely incapable of keeping away from his eight-track cassette recorder. Life was happening all around him; there was too much to songwrite about! Too much to work out through the get-down! So many sludgy, crunchy solos in his head and so many stony grooves and tricky time-signatured bridges to commit to tape! Even if said musical fruits turned out to maybe never see the light of day (which they did, fortunately for the universe), Barnett could no sooner let his ideas evaporate into the ether than he could quit performing any number of vital bodily functions. Off and on, in two- and three-hour chunks between teaching classes over the course of a couple years, he laid down each track of each instrument on what was to become World Record , editing and tweaking, mixing and baking until the alchemy completely settled (though it should be noted that M. Knight played drums on track two.) He gave copies to friends. Friends smiled; Barnett smiled, copious hi-fives were smacked, a live band was assembled and a release date was set.

It is far from hyperbolic to enthusiastically assert that this album—Blunt Mechanic’s first—is Barnett’s finest work to date. Considering the critically-acclaimed and cultishly-followed body of work he has amassed over the past 15 years, it’s understandable that one could lazily dismiss that claim before having heard the onslaught of unstoppable, charming hooks, impeccably constructed songs, heart-wrenching, moving, uplifting storytelling, brilliant turns of phrase and vocal/instrumental interplay that defines World Record. Barnett has here created the culmination of his musical and personal explorations in a way that is powerful, relatable, inspirational, ineffable and communicable, and there’s just no stopping that kind of force.

It’s time, folks, to strap on those headphones and jam the jams. Feel it.

Catching Up With Graham

Baseball season is underway. I was at the Dodgers home opener Tuesday afternoon, watching every Dodger outfielder hit a home run as they cruised to an easy 9-5 victory over the D-backs. Coachella is this weekend, but I believe I'll be staying home. I've said that the last two years and still ended up out there for at least one day of the festival. I'm planning to celebrate Record Store Day on Saturday by stopping by as many Los Angeles area stores as I can. I'll probably start at Amoeba and then make my way to Vacation and Origami, the two all vinyl stores in the city.

VoicesVoices Animal Battles Series Vol.1

The first volume in How to Fight Records "Animal Battles" 7 inch series features VoicesVoices (performing as Gold Ether on the B-side). Every release in this series features exclusive B-sides performed by side projects.

About How To Fight Records

How to Fight Records is an LA-based, mostly vinyl record label that focuses on bands who frequent LA’s legendary DIY venue, The Smell. They have started a 7-inch series entitled “Animal Battles,” in which each band records two exclusive songs with the B-side recorded under a different name and something they wouldn’t usually play. The two animals battling on the cover art (designed by LA's Owleyes) represent the contrast between the A-side and the B-side.

Next week we'll be sending you an EP from Meho Plaza. Meho Plaza has toured with These New Puritans, played with XBXRX, Avi Buffalo, Foot Village, Japanther and shared a practice space with LA punks No Age. They have gained an underground following due to their sold-out, limited edition EPs and critically acclaimed full length (s/t Better Looking Records). Meho Plaza just returned from SXSW, where they played the Smell’s showcase and they are embarking on a west coast tour as well as a southwest tour this summer.

Keep an eye out for upcoming Animal Battles 7 inches from How To Fight Records! Foot Village is next in the series!

The new album is a robust and vigorous second act, filled with primal, bone quaking rock rhythms and the same stellar urban blues and throbbing sleaze as its predecessor; but this time The Dead Weather push their sound even further, brilliantly building upon their raw chemistry to create the most vital sounding album you’ll hear all year. What People Are Saying About Here Lies Love

"She had The Beatles hounded out of her country because they didn't come to lunch at her palace. She used to dance with Andy Warhol at Studio 54. She gave a metaphysical speech to the UN about a philosophy that combines all-encompassing beauty and Pacman. She recently phoned up David Byrne and asked to sing lead vocals on his new record about her life. Imelda Marcos is pretty damned rock'n'roll." - NME

"Despite its considerable conceptual ambition, the album finds Byrne reconnecting with his pop roots in a big way. He hasn’t made as instantly enjoyable an album since Talking Heads disbanded...You’ll have to exert some effort to piece together the story line and figure out which character is singing each song. (The liner notes help immensely). But most songs are perfectly enjoyable in their own right, anyway." - The Star Ledger

I spent most of the weekend resting and recovering from a bit of a fever and SXSW. It was nice to watch some of the NCAA Tournament in bed on my laptop. Yesterday felt like the first day of summer. All about "zii e zie"

“The Brazilian master remains in a league of his own. Forty years after injecting a rock beat into Brazilian pop (and earning the disapproval of the country’s military rulers in the process), Veloso has returned to similar territory... fans won’t be disappointed.” —Times (UK)

Brazilian legend Caetano Veloso’s 41st album, zii e zie, released last year in South America and Europe, has already earned him a Latin Grammy for 2009 Best Singer-Songwriter album; Nonesuch releases the record in the United States on March 30, 2010. The samba-inspired album’s title is an Italian phrase for “uncles and aunts” that the singer/songwriter liked for the way it looks and sounds, and selected “because of the freedom of the mysterious choice.” Veloso returns to the United States in April for six performances, including dates in New York City and Los Angeles (complete dates below).

On zii e zie, which was produced by Pedro Sa and Caetano’s son Moreno Veloso, the singer is joined by the same youthful trio he employed on 2007’s Cê, an album of rock-oriented tracks. “We are people of different generations sharing similar musical and human interests,” Veloso says. David Byrne said of Cê in Artforum, “Veloso has found a sparse, post-rock beauty in which strange yet simple rock instrumentation is juxtaposed with softly seething vocals.”

For zii e zie, Veloso reverses the equation. Here, samba is the foundation, filtered through a rock sensibility. Veloso calls this approach “transamba”—”as if it were samba transcending itself,” he said in an interview. His subject matter, as always, can be intensely personal, but he also takes a broader view of the world at large. As Veloso says of the lyrics, “Mostly they focus on Rio. But even there, they go from the favelas to Leblon, from Lapa to the beach, from Chico Alves to Los Hermanos, from its typical anonymous characters to its atypical celebrities. But they look further still: to Guantánamo, to the caverns in Afghanistan, to Washington, DC.”

Says London’s Guardian, “The songs are intimate and surprising, with sudden bursts of electric guitar transforming the easy-going ‘Falso Leblon,’ and handclaps and funk guitar lines matched against the laid-back vocals on ‘A Cor Amarela.’ Best of all, there’s the half-spoken ‘A Base de Guantánamo,’ which sounds like a classic and angry protest song even if you can’t speak Portuguese.”

Tour Dates

Thursday, April 8 Terminal 5, New York, NY
Saturday, April 10 Lisner Auditorium, George Washington University, Washington, DC
Monday, April 12 Orpheum Theatre, Boston, MA
Thursday, April 15 The Greek Theatre, Los Angeles, CA
Saturday, April 17 Nob Hill Masonic Center, San Francisco, CA
Tuesday, April 20 The Fillmore at the Jackie Gleason Theatre, Miami Beach, FL

Catching Up With Graham

My group's Dodgers season ticket draft was at my place on Tuesday night. For my first three picks I got a pair of tickets for one of the Yankees games, Opening Day, and Andre Ethier Bobblehead Night. I got some good drawing in at Craft Night last night. Tonight I'm going out to Spaceland to see Bell Gardens and Radar Brothers. I'll definitely need the weekend to finally fully recover from SXSW.

I had a great time out in Austin, TX this past week for SXSW. Highlights were: Sun Araw, beef brisket, GWAR, walking down 6th St on St. Patrick's Day as the bars let out, Carolina Chocolate Drops, the Third Man Records pop up store, Black Keys listening party with Pat, and not getting sick. I've already had a house guest since coming home. One of my old friends from college was passing through town. Tomorrow night we're divvying up our Dodgers season tickets. Opening Day is on the horizon. This Friday night is the first show from a new local band that I've recently started working with called Bell Gardens. I'm looking forward to checking them out when they'll be opening up for the Radar Bros. at their record release party at Spaceland.

David Byrne & Fatboy Slim Going For Adds This Week

Last Thursday we digitally serviced you with three new tracks from the forthcoming Here Lies Love release, featuring vocals from Santigold, Sharon Jones, and Steve Earle. This week we are going for adds on the sampler. Email back if you'd like us to resend you the link to download the music.

David Byrne & Fatboy Slim have collaborated on a 22-track song cycle about the life of former First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos and her childhood servant, Estrella Cumpas. The full length album will be released by Todomundo/Nonesuch on April 6th. The Public Theater in New York City is developing a theatrical version of Here Lies Love for a future production.

Top Priority: Carolina Chocolate Drops

Thanks to those of you that have jumped on the Carolina Chocolate Drops new release, Genuine Negro Jig. I hope that this unique album finds a home at your station and continues to grow. This is the perfect college and non-commercial radio record as it's difficult to pigeonhole with the groups wide variety of fresh influences.

Go here and here if you missed either of their recent features on NPR.

Tiny Television

After debuting on the CMJ Top 200 at #194, Tiny Television moved up another spot to #193 this past week. We'd appreciate any support you can give on this release.

The band played in San Francisco last night at a Townes Van Zandt tribute night.

Here's a photo from their Noise Pop performance courtesy of The Bay Bridged. Go here to read their review of that night's showcase.

Praise For Ali & Toumani

"You get the feel of two of the world’s greatest musicians in a room together, having a conversation and creating a document that will carry their legacy into the future… It is the perfect initiation to Touré’s talents for listeners who haven’t yet heard him." - Pitchfork

"For anyone who has not yet had the pleasure of discovering either of these indispensable artists, this release is an ideal point of entry…Profound and powerful. 9 out of 10." - PopMatters

"Intoxicating and seductive tracks that we all should consider a privilege to add to our record collections." - Vanity Fair

"An early contender for the warmest, most life-affirming listen of 2010." - LA Times

The White Stripes "Under Great White Northern Lights"

This is your last chance to set up a "sneak peak" movie for The White Stripes "Under Great White Northern Lights." The film documents the band's journey through Canada to celebrate the release of "Icky Thump" and the 10 year anniversary of the first White Stripes show. This is a great chance to put on a fun event that will draw attention to your station on campus or in your community. Screenings would need to be free events and would ideally take place between now and the end of March. We will be able to provide a DVD for screening, posters to promote the event, and giveaways. Please let me know by the end of the week if you are interested.

You should also have a three-song sampler from the forthcoming live album of the same name. Hope it's getting spins. The full length album should be arrving soon.

The Magnetic Fields

Thanks for all of the continued support on Realism, the new album from The Magnetic Fields. Last week was our 4th week in a row in the Top 10 on the CMJ Top 200. "You Must Be Out Of Your Mind" reached a new heights, coming in as the #3 most played song.

Go here to watch the five part video series of Stephin and Claudia discussing their new album.

Catching Up With Graham

Getting called in for jury duty ended up not being that bad. It was a beautiful day in downtown Los Angeles and a friend of mine happened to get called in on the same day. We got brought in for two possible cases, both for people on trial for murder. I was excused from both since they were expected to last for 2-4 weeks and I have travel plans booked next week for SXSW. Speaking of, let me know if you plan on being in Austin next week. I'm looking forward to some tasty BBQ.

News of the Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse) suicide was a terrible way start to the day yesterday. I shouldn't look at the internet before I get out of bed. I just rolled over and went back to sleep, hoping to wake up to another new day a couple hours later. In the afternoon I stopped by and hung out with 400 Blows in the studio. Their new recordings are turning out great. I can't wait to hear the finished album.

New Music From David Byrne & Fatboy Slim "Here Lies Love"

David Byrne and Fatboy Slim have paired up for Here Lies Love, a 22-track song cycle about the life of former First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos and her childhood servant, Estrella Cumpas. In addition to Byrne and Fatboy Slim, Here Lies Love features performances by Santigold, Florence Welch (Florence + The Machine), Sia, Steve Earle, St. Vincent, Natalie Merchant, Tori Amos, Sharon Jones, Nicole Atkins and many others. Along with the recording, The Public Theater in New York City is developing a theatrical version of Here Lies Love for a future production. The album will be released by Todomundo/Nonesuch on April 6th.

We're excited to be sending you three songs from this forthcoming release, featuring vocal contributions from Santigold, Steve Earle, and Sharon Jones.

This three-song sampler is digital only.

Carolina Chocolate Drops

Thanks to all of you that have jumped on board with the fantastic new album from the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Genuine Negro Jig was one of the biggest movers on the CMJ Top 200 this week, jumping up 91 spots to #51.

If you haven't checked it out yet, "Hit 'Em Up Style" seems to be the favorite track so far, although this album is solid from start to finish.

Go here to listen to the group's interview and instudio performace with Terry Gross this past Monday on NPR's Fresh Air.

Tiny Television "Mission Statement"

Last week I had the pleasure of seeing Tiny Television put on a great show to a hometown crowd during the Noise Pop Festval in San Francisco. Go here to see the San Francisco Bay Guardian's photos and review of the show. Hopefully more of your DJs are starting to pick up on these alt-country rockers' debut album, Mission Statement . We'd love to see this album up on your station's Top 30.

Ali Farka Touré & Toumani Diabaté

"Ali and Toumani" is the second and last album pairing the late guitar virtuoso Ali Farka Touré and kora master Toumani Diabaté. This beautiful album has easily been one of my favorites of the year so far.

Go here to read Pitchfork's enthusiastic review of the album where they gave it an 8.3/10.

Black Keys "Brothers"

The Black Keys are set to release their sixth full- length album, Brothers, May 18 on Nonesuch Records. The White Stripes "Under Great White Northern Lights"

We have another exciting opportunity to set up a "sneak peak" movie screening. This time it's for The White Stripes "Under Great White Northern Lights." Let me know if you are interested.

You should also have a three-song sampler from the forthcoming live album of the same name. Hope you've had the chance to put that out for play.

More About "Here Lies Love"

Here Lies Love came into being when Byrne approached Norman Cook (a.k.a. Fatboy Slim) about collaborating after reading of Imelda Marcos’ affinity for the clubs and discos of the late 1970s and early 1980s. “The world of a royal court [is] surreal and, to my sensibilities, very theatrical,” Byrne notes, “but now there was an added soundtrack!” Byrne further elaborates: “The story I was interested in was that of Imelda’s rise alongside the tragic parallel story of Estrella, the woman who raised her as a child. I felt that this story was more universal, revealing and profound than that of the shoes—which anyway weren’t discovered until the mobs descended upon the Manila palace after the Marcoses fled. For me the Marcoses’ departure from the palace was the end of the story.”

Catching Up With Graham

I've been jamming to some great new tunes that I bought up in San Francisco at Aquarius Records this past week: Omar Souleyman, Pantha Du Prince, Blues Control, King Midas Sound, and Black Man's Cry: The Inspiration of Fela Kuti. I got called in for jury duty today, so it might take me a bit longer than usual to get back to you. Who's excited for SXSW?

Catching Up With Graham

Last week we got my stand-up Ms. Pac-Man machine up and running. I had a party on Saturday night to celebrate. Here I am setting the high score of this night at 152,950. That's nothing compared to the personal all-time best score of 263,040 that I got the night after we fixed it.

I finished my first book of the year over the weekend: Bill Drummond's 45. I loved every page of this memoir from the KLF / K Foundation member. I had no idea that he managed Echo & The Bunnymen too. Also highly recommended is his book The Manual (How to Have a Number One the Easy Way), co-written with his partner-in-crime Jimmy Cauty

This past Superbowl Sunday I attended Guac Bowl X. Once again the competition was fierce with dozens of eclectic guacamole entries. My friend Tim won two trophies for his entry of “The Guacapellas”.

While I have never entered the competition myself, I have been going since the beginning. I even tallied up the votes for the first one. The only Guac Bowl that I missed was when I was following Jeff Tweedy up and down the West Coast in 2006. That just happened to be the year the Seattle Seahawks, the team I grew up watching, made it to the Super Bowl. Fortunately I was able to watch the game with some great friends and fellow Seahawk fans up in Portland, OR. Unfortunately they lost to the Steelers. It's so strange that Los Angeles still does not have an NFL team. For the most part it seems that people here follow either the Raiders or the Chargers as their local team.

Visit www.guacbowl.com for more info on the greatest and most celebrated guacamole competition/SuperBowl party in the world.

Realism Top 5 Most Added

Thanks to all of you that added The Magnetic Fields' new album this past week. We're looking for chart numbers now. Hope to see Realism picking up at your station soon.

Check out this blog that is illustrating The Magnetic Fields' classic 69 Love Songs.

Tiny Television Coming This Week

Mission Statement, the debut release from San Francisco's Tiny Television will be arriving this week. Those of you on the physical mailing list should be seeing CDs soon. The digital servicing will be coming a bit later this week. The full length is going for adds next week: February 8th & 9th.

The White Stripes "Under Great White Northern Lights"

We have another exciting opportunity to set up a "sneak peak" movie screening. This time it's for The White Stripes "Under Great White Northern Lights." The film documents the band's journey through Canada to celebrate the release of Icky Thump and the 10 year anniversary of the first White Stripes show. This is a great chance to put on a fun event that will draw attention to your station on campus or in your community. Screenings would need to be free events and would ideally take place between March 1st and March 22nd. We will be able to provide a DVD for screening, posters to promote the event, and giveaways. Let me know if you are interested.

More info about the release can be found at www.whitestripes.com

Babies were the theme of the weekend. On Saturday there was a birthday party for twin girls turning three. In attendance were at least two other sets of twins. The theme was Fairies and Pirates, and the cuteness factor was a little overwhelming. Here are two of the guests dressed as Robin Hood. Four of my good friends from college are expecting babies and on Sunday there was a wonderful shower to celebrate. Bekah and I finished wrecking havoc in Los Angeles and she's back up in Seattle starting her new job at Sub Pop.

Realism - Goes for Adds Today and Tomorrow

I hope you've had the chance to check out Realism, the fantastic new record from The Magnetic Fields. Now it's time to show your support by starting to give it some spins and reporting it as an add.

Favorite tracks might include: #1 ("You Must Be Out of Your Mind"), #12 ("The Dada Polka"), #6 ("Everything Is One Big Christmas Tree"), and #3 ("We Are Having a Hootenanny")

The whole album is FCC clean.

With no synths, no drum kits, and every instrument unplugged, the pristine Realism is the flip-side to the brash noise-pop of The Magnetic Fields' 2008 Distortion. Singer-songwriter Stephin Merritt calls it "folk," but with its wide range of instrumentation and orchestrated arrangements, says Merritt, "Realism is a more kaleidoscopic approach to a genre.”

Hope you all had a great weekend. Bekah arrived on Saturday morning and we've been having a great time under the sunny and smogless Southern California skies. We decided not to splurge $500 each to see Radiohead last night and opted for a lazy day of football watching. Within an hour of driving her rental car we had a flat tire. Here's a photo of her and the AAA man changing the Yaris' tire on Sunset Blvd.

Let me know if you have new office hours for the new year. It would also be a good time to make check and make sure that I am on the list to receive your emails.

Realism - New album from The Magnetic Fields coming this week

This week A man A plan A canal is very excited to be bringing you Realism, the new album from The Magnetic Fields. The digital servicing will be arriving in your inbox tomorrow. The album is going for adds on January 26th. It's the band's folk/acoustic counterpart to 2008's noise pop inspired Distortion. It's quickly become one of my favorites in the band's brilliant catalog, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

BlakRoc

If there had been a chart last week, I'm guessing that BlakRoc would be somewhere near the top. We are looking for your continued support on this great album in 2010. It's not too late to jump on board if this one slipped by you before you took off for the holiday break. Please let me know if you need a clean version of the album and I can send one over to you right away.

Coming soon from A man A plan A canal is the new album from San Francisco based alt-country rockers Tiny Television. Their beautifully producted debut album Mission Statement already shows a mature level of songwriting. Go here for a sneak peak.

Hope all has been well with you during this winter season. Now if only CMJ could get their act together. It might be time for someone to step forward and create an alternative.

I've spent much of the past month reorganizing my office, growing a beard, and getting ready for a fantastic 2010.

Let me know if you're planning on being up in San Francisco for this year's Noise Pop festival at the end of February. Both Tiny Television and The Magnetic Fields are playing, so I plan to be up there.

Let me know if you have new office hours for the new year.

"Everything Is One Big Christmas Tree" - New Music From The Magnetic Fields

We're excited to be sending you a brand new song from one of the best living songwriters, Stephin Merrit. The Magnetic Fields are back with their folk counterpart to 2008's Distortion. The first song we're sending to you is called "Everything Is One Big Christmas Tree." While not a Christmas song per se, it definitely has some holiday cheer to it. This song hasn't made its rounds on the internet yet, so here's a chance to actually bring new music to your listeners first by downloading and playing it today.

BlakRoc

Thanks to the 145 of you that officially added BlakRoc to CMJ this past week. I hope that you've taken the time to download yourself a copy of the clean version that I sent out. It's nice to have more songs to choose from. Let me know if you need me to send you another link and code if you missed out on it the first time around.

The Flaming Lips Show Their Dark Side

The Flaming Lips have just announced the details of their annual New Year's Eve Freakout and they are going to be performing Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in it's entirety at the stroke of midnight. Go here to watch Wayne Coyne's video telling you all about it.

Built to Spill

Thanks again for all of your continued support on There Is No Enemy. The record is still holding strong in the Top 10 at CMJ. Here's another photo from the band's recent KEXP instudio. Lookout for more touring in 2010.

Critics agree that this is one of the best Built to Spill records yet:

“Songs that are as dense and complex as they are breezy and easy-to-sing…somehow, Built To Spill continues to deserve every column inch of praise the band will inevitably receive. Another praiseworthy work in a catalog that’s permitted few mistakes.” -- ShockHound.Com

“A predictable godsend.” – Filter Magazine

“There’s something for everyone, unless everyone hates guitars.” -- Metromix.Com

Happy holidays. My fake tree has made it up from the garage, but hasn't been put up yet. I'm slowly getting into the spirit. We're having what is possibly our first real rainstorm of the year in Los Angeles. I had two great museum visits this weekend: Joseph Beuys at LACMA and Collection: MOCA's First Thirty Years.

I was saddened hearing of the death of the exceptional guitarist Jack Rose this weekend. Heart attack at 38. Terrible. A fine tribute can be found at Arthur. Arthur Fest was the only time I saw him play in person. R.I.P.
